Roar For Reading

Welcome to NSHA’s Roar For Reading Summer Program 2023!

The most important thing that you can do for your children this summer is to make reading a top priority. Research shows that you can dramatically decrease your child’s summer slide, or academic regression that takes place each summer, by ensuring that your child reads for at least 20 minutes everyday. Reading is defined as you reading to your child, your child reading to you or when ready, your child reading independently.  Reading aloud to your child at any age helps to expand his/her literacy skills including listening comprehension and vocabulary development, love of reading, and empathy and awareness of the world around them.

With this in mind, we are not distributing a Summer Homework packet this summer, but rather we are sharing a Summer Reading List for each grade through “NSHA’s Roar for Summer Reading” initiative! This list is a small selection of the thousands of incredible children’s books available in the world, but curated for our students to encourage a love of reading. In addition to fiction lists by grade level, we’ve put together lower and upper elementary nonfiction reading lists as well. As every child is different, you will notice a range of reading levels on each list, and you are also welcome to look at the list above and below your child’s grade for additional suggestions.

This summer, your child should be reading every day, and must also read three books from his/her grade’s Summer Reading List. Depending on the books your child chooses, and his/her own independent reading level, your child may be able to read this book independently, or you may choose to read it to him/her.

We look forward to hearing all about the books your child reads in September! If you’d like additional support in selecting books for your children, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’m always happy to talk about books.

Wishing you and your family a safe and healthy summer full of reading,
