Chesed

On their journey to becoming compassionate, generous young adults, our students make a commitment to helping others. Chesed activities encourage every student to volunteer their time and energy – from causes that affect our school and our Jewish community, to nationwide and global issues.

At NSHAHS, chesed takes several forms:

Mandatory Chesed Program

Ninth and tenth grade students are responsible for fulfilling 30-40 hours of chesed outside of school. During these hours, students learn that there are countless ways to help those in need, and that chesed is necessary to being a contributing member of our community and society. In years past, students have spent time with children and adults with special needs, volunteered at local synagogues, staffed JCC events, organized food and clothing drives, and more.

Chesed Club

For students who enjoy and want to spend more time volunteering, the Chesed Club provides special opportunities to do so! Chesed Club members have volunteered at Masbia, a soup kitchen in Queens; organized Knock Knock Give a Sock sock drives and events for the homeless; and more. Members also help organize and execute our school-wide Chesed Day.

Chesed Day

Each year during Chanukah, NSHAHS celebrates Chesed Day. Every student sets aside their studies to volunteer their time and energy for a school-wide charity project. In recent years, NSHAHS students have spent Chesed Day volunteering at soup kitchens and food pantries, socializing with nursing home residents, visiting homebound members of our community, sorting donated clothing, and packing holiday food packages. Often, our school will partner with Yachad’s IVDU schools for students with special needs to celebrate holidays and special events together.
