Bechina Yisraelit
בחינה ישראלית

During the two-year, intensive Bechina Yisraelit, Jerusalem Examination program, students gain a deep familiarity and comprehensive understanding of the texts, liturgy, literature, and philosophy that are at the foundation of the Jewish people.

The Bechina Yisraelit is an extensive test of Hebrew and Jewish knowledge and literature, designed specifically for Jewish high school students outside of Israel. The two-part examination tests knowledge of literary, Jewish classical, and modern sources, as well as knowledge of Hebrew through comprehension of a never-before-seen passage, the writing of a short composition, and the completion of grammar exercises. Upon completion of the exam, students can gain college credit.

At NSHAHS, class discussions, readings, and homework are conducted in Hebrew. Students explore a well-rounded curriculum with selections from the Chumash, Nevi’im, Ketuvim, and Mishna. Students study Tefila and the works of Jewish philosophical thinkers like Rabbi Yehuda Halevi and Maimonides.

Just like in a high-level high school literature class in Israel, students delve deeply into Jewish and Israeli history, historical and modern Israeli literature and poetry, and practical reading comprehension, grammar, and writing skills. As they expand their Hebrew comprehension and explore complex topics including the revival of modern Hebrew, the establishment of the state of Israel, the Shoah, the Hasidic movement, and modern Israeli culture and humor, students grow their knowledge of – and empathy for – Jewish writers and thinkers throughout history.

NSHAHS offers an advanced curriculum typically studied in the 10th and 11th grade that empowers our students to succeed in the prestigious Bechinat Yisraelit administered by Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This exam is recognized by many colleges and universities for official credit.

The curriculum includes Tanach, Mishna, tefilla, and Jewish philosophy, as well as medieval and modern Hebrew literature. It encompasses fundamental classical texts that cultivate a well-rounded knowledge of Jewish formative writings. Students study both narrative and poetic Biblical sections and delve into textual analysis. The sections of Mishna provide a background and familiarity with the Jewish oral tradition, Torah Sheba’al Peh. Medieval Jewish philosophical texts challenge students to think and better understand their Jewish identity, and classical and modern Hebrew literature connect our students to our rich history and to the Hebrew language. This course of study deepens the bonds with our Jewish homeland, Eretz Israel, and students emerge with a profound appreciation and meaningful understanding of their Judaism.
